Where to Place Nesting Materials:
Nesting materials should be placed so that birds can easily find them. These can be placed on a crevice or nook of a tree branch, hung over on a clothesline or placed in a suet basket hung on a tree branch. Never place nesting materials in or on a nest box because the birds may think that the nest box is occupied.

Following are some materials that you can provide for the birds. Keep in mind that yarns, strings, threads and ropes longer than 4" in length can cause the bird to become entangled.
